Paddle with us —
from the Waimata
to the world stage.

Gisborne's home of kayaking since 1978. All levels welcome — whether you're picking up a paddle for the first time or chasing a podium.

Founded in 1978, the Poverty Bay Kayak Club has a proud history of developing paddlers who've gone on to compete — and win — at national, world championship and Olympic level.

We're based in a great spot right on the Waimata River, next to Anzac Park and just five minutes from the Gisborne city centre. The river's natural layout means we can paddle pretty much year-round, with conditions that are welcoming for beginners and challenging enough for serious competitors.

Racing season runs November through April, with club paddling continuing through winter from May to October — so there's always something happening on the water.

We share the Anzac Park precinct with the Gisborne Rowing Club, Schools Rowing Club, Waka ama, and Scout Club. There's plenty of parking for cars and bikes, and the park is a great space to warm up before hitting the water.

Members get the chance to compete at local and national regattas, whatever your level. Whether you're just getting started or chasing podiums, there's a place for you at PBKC.

We're a proud affiliate of Canoe Racing New Zealand (CRNZ).
